Some personality tests are more accurate and accredited than others. When it comes to job matching, most experts rely on Myers-Briggs, Big Five, Mensa, and Goleman’s EQ Test. In the next few sections, we’ll teach you what you can learn about yourself from these tests.

You may have heard of or taken this test without realizing it. The Myers-Briggs personality test has become popular in recent years. Some high schools even give this test to their students before they graduate. Essentially, it’s a short, easy, and fun test that will tell you more about yourself and even suggest potentially interesting fields.
Myers-Briggs is based on Carl Jung’s psychological theory of personality archetypes and how they manifest in people. It is one of the most popular personality tests available to date. At the end of the test, takers receive five letters that represent various personality aspects: mind, energy, nature, tactics, and identity. These can help you better understand what you excel at.
The Big Five test is similar to the Myers-Briggs in both nature and effectiveness. It assesses how you perceive certain common language descriptors when compared to each other. The test will often apply these words to you, asking which word best fits your personality or how you view the world. Someone who is conscientious could be described as “always prepared” instead of “messy”.
These word relationships are then run through statistical functions to measure how much you align with the big five personality traits. Traits include openness to experience, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism. This is another quick, insightful, and easy test.
This test measures your Intelligence Quotient (IQ) which is useful to know if you understand what IQ truly represents. A higher IQ score simply means that you’re better at taking standardized tests than others. It is NOT the same as being smarter than others with a lower IQ. Additionally, the Mensa test is primarily for entertainment purposes; you shouldn’t use it to precisely measure your IQ.
It’s still worth taking this test even with all of the disclaimers above. Scoring highly on could mean you’re good at pattern recognition or well-equipped to navigate through refined processes that are a part of some jobs. You can also join the Mensa International group to engage in stimulating intellectual discussions if you score in the 98th percentile.
One caveat: the Mensa test takes up to 30 minutes, which is slightly longer than the Myers-Briggs and Big Five. That said, it’s still well worth the time.
Goleman’s Emotional Quotient (EQ) Test
Similar to IQ tests, EQ tests measure your affinity for social situations. EQ measures your ability to empathize with others, asses and control yours and others’ emotions, and how you utilize emotions in your thinking process. Some argue that EQ is more valuable than IQ, but just remember that at the end of the day, these tests aren’t solidifying your place in society if you don’t score well.
Goleman’s EQ test will measure your response to stories and how you’d interact in those scenarios. It’s unlike other tests which ask direct questions with a “right or wrong” answer. Daniel Goleman is a psychologist and science journalist who wrote the book “Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More Than IQ” that inspires this test.
It’s very useful to learn about your emotional capability, IQ, and personality traits before you plan your future.
